Buying guide

Titan Spray Guns, Tips & Accessories: what to know before you buy

Quick answer

Spray guns, tips, filters, seals and hoses are the wear parts of every airless sprayer. When the fan pattern narrows or grows tails, replace the spray tip. When paint drips or the gun spits, rebuild the gun with a repair kit or a new tip seal. When pressure drops or the tip keeps clogging, change the manifold filter and inlet screen. Genuine Titan parts keep the original fit, thread and pressure rating.

Titan spray tip chart: which tip for which material?

A spray tip number has three digits. Double the first digit to get the fan width in inches, sprayed about 12 inches from the surface. The last two digits are the orifice size in thousandths of an inch. A 517 tip therefore sprays a 10-inch fan through a .017″ orifice. Choose the orifice for the material and the fan width for the surface: narrow fans suit trim and doors, wide fans suit walls and ceilings.

Elastomerics and block filler.023–.035625, 631, 63530 mesh (coarse, green) or none

Always check the largest tip your sprayer supports: bigger orifices need more GPM. For a step-by-step guide, read how to choose the correct airless spray tip size.

Wear parts to keep in your truck

  • Two spare tips in your most-used sizes. A worn tip wastes paint and leaves stripes long before it looks damaged.
  • A tip seal pack. The 661-020 tip seat and seal kit (5 pack) stops leaks around the tip.
  • Gun filters and a manifold filter in the right mesh for your material, so a clog never ends the day.
  • A gun repair kit for your gun model, to stop drips when the needle and seat wear.
  • A tip guard that matches your gun thread. Never spray without one.

Double the first digit to get the fan width in inches when sprayed about 12 inches from the surface, so a 5 means a 10-inch fan. The last two digits are the orifice size in thousandths of an inch, so 17 means .017″. A 517 is a common all-round tip for interior and exterior latex.

Most latex wall paint sprays well through a .015–.019 orifice. A 515 or 517 suits walls and ceilings, a 315 or 415 suits doors and trim, and heavier exterior latex or primer may need a 519 or 621. Confirm the tip is within your sprayer's maximum tip size.

Replace the tip when the fan pattern gets narrower, the edges show tails or heavy lines, or you have to raise the pressure to get the same finish. Those are signs the orifice has worn larger. A worn tip uses more paint and puts extra wear on the pump, so a new tip usually pays for itself quickly.

All three are reversible Titan airless tips, so you can rotate them 180° to blow out a clog. TR1 is Titan's standard contractor reversible tip. TR1 HEA (High Efficiency Airless) tips are designed to spray at lower pressure with a softer pattern and less overspray. SC-6+ is Titan's other reversible tip line and is also available in dedicated fine-finish sizes for trim and cabinets.

For most contractors the RX-80 is the dependable everyday choice. It is rated to 3600 PSI and is the most-ordered gun family on AllTitanParts. Choose the RX-Pro if you spray all day and want a lighter gun with a 360° swivel. Choose the RX-APEX, rated to 5000 PSI, for high-pressure work and heavier coatings.

Match the filter to the material. Use 100 mesh (fine) for stains, lacquers and thin finishes, 60 mesh (medium) for most latex and enamels, and 30 mesh (coarse) for primers and heavy-bodied coatings. Very thick materials such as block filler are often sprayed with a coarse filter or none. The filter should also be finer than your tip orifice so debris is caught before it clogs the tip.

The hose must be rated at or above your sprayer's maximum working pressure. A 3300 PSI hose suits sprayers that top out at 3300 PSI, while higher-pressure rigs need 3600, 4500 or higher-rated hose. Replace any hose that is cut, bulging, kinked or leaking. Never tape or patch a high-pressure hose.

Spitting usually means a partial clog, a worn tip or low pressure. Dripping after you release the trigger usually means a worn tip seal or a worn needle and seat inside the gun. Clean or reverse the tip first, then replace the tip seal, and rebuild the gun with the repair kit for your model if it still leaks.
