The piston rod (called a displacement rod on larger pumps) is the hard-surfaced rod that moves up and down through the packings to pump paint. Replace it when it is scored, pitted or worn, especially if new packings start leaking soon after a repack. Find your sprayer in the table below. The Impact 440/540/640 uses piston assembly 704-552A, the 440i/440ix/640ix uses rod 704-551A, the Impact X 440 uses 2420579A, and the PowrTwin 8900 uses displacement rod 144-117.
Genuine Titan piston rods and piston assemblies
The piston rod is the heart of an airless sprayer's fluid section. It slides through the upper and lower packings thousands of times a minute, so its surface has to stay smooth and true. Once a rod is scored by grit or worn through its hard surface, it cuts new packings and the pump loses pressure. Piston rod, piston assembly or displacement rod: what's the difference?
- Piston rod. The rod on its own. Choose it when the rest of the piston and valve are in good condition.
- Piston assembly. The rod supplied pre-assembled with its piston and valve parts. It is the faster, more complete repair when those parts are also worn. Check each product page for exactly what is included.
- Displacement rod. Titan's name for the pumping rod on larger PowrTwin, PowrLiner, PowrBeast and PowrCoat pumps. It does the same job as a piston rod.
Signs your piston rod needs replacing
- Visible scoring, grooves or pitting along the rod where it passes through the packings.
- Worn or flaking hard surface, or a dull band where the packings ride.
- New packings leak soon after a repack. A damaged rod cuts fresh seals quickly.
- The pump won't hold pressure even with a new repacking kit and clean valves.
- Paint in the piston lube or throat area that returns right after cleaning.
Get the most life from a new piston rod
- Always fit a new repacking kit with a new rod. Old packings can carry grit that scores the new rod.
- Keep the upper packings wet with Titan piston lube as your manual directs, so paint can't dry on the rod between strokes.
- Clean the inlet screen and manifold filter. Debris is what scores rods in the first place.
- Flush the pump after every job and store it with pump protector. Dried paint on the rod tears the packings on start-up.
- Follow the fluid section drawing in your parts diagram or manual when reassembling.
