This assembly converts the reciprocating motion from the drive system into the pumping action that draws coating material from the container and pressurizes it for delivery to the spray tip. The piston assembly consists of a precision-ground metal piston body surrounded by packings, typically made of leather, urethane, or synthetic materials, that seal against the inner wall of the cylinder. As the piston moves forward on the pressure stroke, the packings expand against the cylinder wall, creating a seal that forces material out through the outlet valve. On the return intake stroke, the packings relax slightly, allowing material to flow past the piston from the inlet side. This dynamic sealing action is critical for efficient pumping. Over the service life of the sprayer, the piston assembly experiences continuous mechanical wear and chemical exposure. The packings gradually lose elasticity, becoming hard, cracked, or worn, which allows material to bypass the piston instead of being pressurized. The piston surface itself may become scored or worn by abrasive pigments in the coating. These conditions manifest as reduced output pressure, loss of prime, material leaking from the fluid section, or the sprayer running continuously without building pressure.
