In Short

Cover everything in the room that must stay clean: floors, windows, doors, trim, fixtures and furniture, using tape with plastic or drop cloths. Airless spraying produces a lot of bounce-off, so it needs more masking than rolling. One caution from Titan's Impact 440 manual: never hang plastic to enclose the spray area, because of a static hazard.

Why spraying needs more covering than rolling

Sherwin-Williams points out that airless spraying produces a lot of bounce-off that falls on everything nearby, so you have to cover anything that must stay clean. Rolling needs less masking. That is the trade you make for speed: a sprayer covers a large wall quickly, and the saving comes only if the covering does not eat the time.

Sherwin-Williams also notes that spraying is much faster on new work when the trim is not yet installed. In a furnished or occupied room, moving, masking and covering things slows the job down. Decide that before you commit to spraying a room, because masking can be the biggest part of the job.

What to cover

Wagner lists drop cloths, masking tape and plastic masking sheets as the basic kit, plus a spray shelter for large areas. Matching that to a room, cover or move these:

  • Floors with drop cloths, taped at the edges so they do not shift.
  • Doors, trim and windows with tape and plastic or drop cloths, as Sherwin-Williams, Wagner and Behr describe.
  • Light fixtures, outlet covers and anything fixed to the wall that you do not want painted.
  • Furniture: carry it out of the room if you can, and cover whatever stays.
  • The adjoining space: a doorway left open lets bounce-off drift into the next room.

Tape and plastic

Tape holds plastic against a window frame, door or edge of trim so the paint cannot get behind it. Run the tape along the edge you are protecting, then press the plastic onto the tape so the plastic hangs against the surface it protects. Plastic that is loose can flap and gather paint, so keep it tight to the surface.

Drop cloths do the job on the floor. Plastic sheeting works for windows, doors and fixtures. We do not recommend a particular tape brand here, and the manuals do not name one, so use a tape suited to the surface and follow its instructions.

Safety while masking

Do not enclose the spray area with plasticTitan's Impact 440 manual says never to hang plastic to enclose the spray area, because of a static hazard. That caution comes from one manual, so check yours. It means covering surfaces, not building a tent around yourself and the sprayer. Keep the area well ventilated, away from open flame, and ground the whole system as your manual describes.

Pump placement matters too. The Impact 440 manual says to place the pump at least 25 ft from the object being sprayed, in a ventilated area, which is another reason to keep masked surfaces and the pump apart. Follow your model's manual for the distance.

Move or cover furniture and fixtures

Furniture, doors, windows and carpet slow the process, which is Sherwin-Williams' point about occupied rooms. If you can empty the room, do. If not, push furniture to the center, cover it fully and keep paint cans and the sprayer out of the covered area so you do not step in a spill on plastic.

We cannot give you a masking time, because the sources do not publish one, and it varies with the room.

Reduce what reaches the covers

Behr notes that matching the fan width to the surface cuts overspray and wasted paint. Use the lowest pressure that atomizes the coating completely, since lower pressure reduces overspray, tip wear and strain on the pump. High Efficiency Airless tips are designed to atomize at about 1000 psi or lower, and Titan says they give up to 55% less overspray.

For equipment, the guns, hoses and tip kits page lists complete kits such as the RX-Pro 0538022 gun, and the airless spray tips page covers tips on their own. A 0290623 spray shield kit is listed in the sprayer accessories section on the PowrLiner 4500 diagram, so confirm it suits your sprayer first. A 50 ft spray hose is on the hoses page. Whichever kit you use, follow the pressure relief procedure in your manual when you stop.

The Short Version

Budget real time for masking: floors, doors, windows, trim and fixtures, with tape and plastic or drop cloths. Do not hang plastic to enclose the spray area, and keep the room ventilated. Lower pressure and a fan width that matches the surface mean less paint to catch.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I protect a room before spraying paint?
Cover floors with drop cloths and mask doors, trim, windows and fixtures with tape and plastic or drop cloths. Move furniture out if you can, and cover what stays. Airless spraying produces a lot of bounce-off, so cover anything that must stay clean.
Do I need to cover floors when using an airless sprayer?
Yes. Sherwin-Williams notes that airless spraying produces a lot of bounce-off that falls on everything nearby, so cover whatever must stay clean, including the floor.
Can I hang plastic to enclose the spray area?
Titan's Impact 440 manual says never to hang plastic to enclose the spray area, because of a static hazard. That caution comes from one manual, so read yours. Covering surfaces with plastic is different from enclosing the area.
Is masking quicker than moving furniture out?
The sources give no times. Sherwin-Williams says moving, masking and covering in an occupied room slows spraying down, so emptying the room, if you can, avoids that work.
