The 449-187 belgard clip is a specialized retaining clip used extensively in the drive linkage and pivot point assemblies of PowrTwin, PowrTex, and PowrLiner airless sprayers. Its primary function is to axially retain pins, shafts, and linkage components while allowing them to rotate freely within their mating bushings or bores. The unique "belgard" design features a formed spring steel construction with specific engagement tabs that snap into grooves or recesses on the retained component, providing positive retention without the need for additional fasteners like cotter pins or set screws.

In the demanding environment of high-pressure sprayers, these clips are subjected to constant vibration, cyclic loading, and exposure to paint overspray and cleaning solvents. Over time, a belgard clip can fatigue, losing its spring tension and allowing the retained pin to walk laterally. This lateral movement can cause misalignment of linkage components, leading to increased wear, binding, and eventual failure of the drive system. In severe cases, a broken or missing clip can allow a pivot pin to completely disengage, causing catastrophic damage to the pump housing or drive components.
