In Short

With pressure relieved and the sprayer unplugged, loosen the bolt on the front of the belt guard and lift the guard's front end. Raise the front of the engine or motor to slacken the belt, slip it off both pulleys, then fit the new one in the fixed part of the guard, over the rear pulley first and the front pulley second. Lower the motor so its weight tensions the belt, check it is not twisted, and close the guard.

The belt on a PowrTwin Plus links the gas engine or electric motor to the rest of the drive, and changing it is the shortest job in Titan's repair chapter. The PowrTwin Plus manual for the 4900, 6900 and 8900 prints the procedure with a gas engine in the pictures and says it applies to electric models too, except where noted. The PowrTwin Plus DI manual prints the same steps, so a 6900 Plus DI owner can follow along. What changes from model to model is the belt part number, which is why this page spends time on that too.

When the PowrTwin Belt Is the Problem

What to look for with the guard open

Titan's manual gives the belt procedure but no list of belt failure symptoms, so the evidence is what you find once the front of the guard is lifted. These are the conditions that mean the belt comes off:

  • The belt is broken, or missing from one or both pulleys.
  • It has come off the front or rear pulley groove.
  • It sits pinched or twisted in the guard, the condition the manual tells you to correct before the motor goes back down.
  • There is visible damage on the belt itself. Fit a new one rather than refitting a damaged belt.

Rule out the cheaper causes first

Weak spraying is not automatically a drive problem. The manual's troubleshooting table blames low fluid pressure on a worn spray tip, a clogged outlet or gun filter, low voltage or inadequate amperage, or a hose that is too small or too long. A motor that stalls at the top or bottom of its stroke points to the spool valve, the valve rod assembly or air in the hydraulic motor, with loose fittings and low oil in the reservoir among the causes. Our article on PowrTwin hydraulic motor stalls walks through those before you buy a belt.

Where two belts share one callout, the right one depends on how your unit is powered. Check your diagram, or call (713) 931-0006 with the model and serial number.

Tools and supplies

  • A wrench or socket for the bolt on the front of the belt guard (the manual does not give a size)
  • The replacement belt for your model and power type
  • Nothing to adjust the tension with: the weight of the engine or motor does that job

Lock Out the PowrTwin Before You Touch the Belt

Titan's repair chapter starts with the Pressure Relief Procedure from section 4.6 of the Operation Manual, and the belt section repeats it: do it first, and never attempt this repair while the unit is running. Then unplug the sprayer. The pressure relief article and our PowrTwin start-up and shut-down checklist cover the routine. On gas units the engine and muffler stay hot for a while after shut-down, so give them time.

Pinch and burn hazardsKeep your fingers clear of the mounting plate under the gas engine or electric motor whenever you lift it or set it down. Touch a gas engine only after it has had time to cool. Turning the engine off does not release fluid pressure, so a hose that is still under pressure remains an injection risk while you work.

Replacing the PowrTwin Belt: Step by Step

Step 1: Open the belt guard

Loosen the bolt on the front of the belt guard and lift the front end of the guard open. That exposes the front end of the belt.

Step 2: Lift the motor to slacken the belt

Gently raise the front end of the gas engine or electric motor. Lifting it takes the tension off the belt and makes removal easy.

Step 3: Take the old belt off

Hold the engine or motor up and slip the belt off the front pulley and the rear pulley.

Step 4: Start the new belt at the rear

Feed the new belt into the fixed section of the belt guard. Loop it over the rear pulley until it drops into the pulley groove.

Step 5: Lift again and loop the front pulley

Raise the front end of the engine or motor once more and, while it is up, wrap the free end of the belt around the front pulley.

Step 6: Lower the motor to set the tension

Set the engine or motor down gently. Its weight tensions the belt and keeps it from coming off; before you go further, look along the belt and make sure it is not pinched or twisted anywhere.

Step 7: Close the guard

Swing the belt guard shut and tighten the belt guard bolt.

Gas or electricThe manual's pictures show a gas engine, but the same steps apply to electric motor models except where the text notes a difference. Only the belt number on your diagram changes with the power type.

Test the New Belt

Check before you start the sprayer

  • The belt sits in the groove of both pulleys, with no twist and no pinch under the motor.
  • The engine or motor rests fully on its mount, holding the belt tight by its own weight.
  • The guard is closed and its front bolt is tight.

Confirm the pump cycles normally

Start and prime the sprayer the way the Operation Manual describes, then watch a few strokes. The manual adds no separate belt test, so judge the result by the pump: steady, even strokes and normal pressure at the gun. If the strokes are uneven or the pressure stays low, go back to the troubleshooting causes above, or to our PowrTwin pump problems article.

Belt Mistakes to Avoid

  • Starting work with the unit running, or without relieving pressure and unplugging first.
  • Resting your fingers on or under the motor mounting plate while you lift or lower it.
  • Handling a gas engine or muffler before it has cooled.
  • Lowering the motor onto a belt that is pinched or twisted.
  • Leaving the guard open or its bolt loose after the job.
  • Ordering a belt by its name alone, when the diagrams list different belts by model and power type.

Order the Right PowrTwin Belt

Open your own model's diagram and read the belt callout: the PowrTwin Plus 6900 main assembly, the Plus 8900 main assembly or the 4900 main assembly. Our PowrTwin Plus V-belt article lines the numbers up by model. If the pump itself needs work, the next job is replacing the PowrTwin 6900 Plus DI packings; a Hydra X owner wants the Hydra X belt guide. Every procedure is listed under all repair guides.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which belt fits my PowrTwin 6900 Plus?
The PowrTwin Plus 6900 main assembly diagram lists two belts at the belt callout: 449-181, marked 120V, and 449-125, an A-40 V-belt. The 6900 Plus DI diagram lists 449-125. Which one your unit needs depends on its power type, so check the diagram or call (713) 931-0006 with your model and serial number.
Do I need to adjust the belt tension on a PowrTwin?
No. Titan's manual has you lift the front of the engine or motor to fit the belt and then set it down gently. The weight of the engine or motor creates the tension and keeps the belt from coming off. Your only check is that the belt is not pinched or twisted before you close the guard.
Is the belt change the same on gas and electric PowrTwins?
Yes, apart from details the manual notes. Its pictures show a gas engine, and it says the instructions apply to both gas engine and electric motor models. The belt part number can differ with the power type, so read your own main assembly diagram before you order.
Can I change the belt with the engine still warm?
The manual says to make sure the gas engine has had time to cool before you touch it, and never to attempt the repair while the unit is running. Relieve the pressure, unplug or shut the unit down, and wait until the engine and muffler are cool.
