A worn spray tip rarely fails without warning. As a tip wears, its orifice grows and its fan gets narrower. Tails at the pattern edges, a heavy center with thin edges, or needing more pressure than you used to for the same result are all reasons to suspect the tip. Our spray tip size guide covers selection; this guide covers knowing when to replace. AllTitanParts.com sells genuine Titan tips. Most available items are processed for shipment within about 1-2 business days, though some are ordered from the manufacturer after you order (see Shipping Info).

Wear vs Dirt: Testing the Difference
Before assuming a tip is worn out, rule out the simpler explanation: debris caught in the orifice. Relieve pressure first, then clean the tip. On a reversible tip, the RX-Pro manual's clearing method is to rotate the tip 180 degrees so the handle arrow points opposite the spray direction and pull the trigger once. Never pull the trigger more than once in reverse, and follow your own gun's manual. If the same pattern problem returns shortly after cleaning, the orifice itself has likely worn, which cleaning cannot fix.
Sign 1: Tails at the Pattern Edges
Feathered tails at the edges of the fan, instead of a clean cutoff, are a classic sign the tip may be at fault. Check that the material is thinned as the manufacturer directs and that the filters are clean first, since a clogged pump or gun filter causes poor patterns too. If the tails remain after that, a worn tip is a likely cause. A tip that has worn larger than its size also asks more of the pump.
Sign 2: Heavy Center, Thin Edges
A pattern that lays down heavily in the middle and thins toward the edges can come from an unevenly worn orifice. Reference our spray tip size guide if you also suspect the tip size is wrong for your coating, since that can look similar to wear. To read the three-digit number on a tip, see How to Read a Titan Tip Number and Choose a Size: 517, 311, 619.
Sign 3: Needing More Pressure Over Time
If you find yourself gradually raising pressure just to keep the spray quality you used to get at a lower setting, check the tip. Titan's manuals list a worn tip among the causes of poor spray patterns and of a sprayer that will not build or hold pressure, along with air leaks, clogged filters and fluid section wear.
- Note your typical working pressure for a given coating when a tip is new.
- Watch for that number creeping upward over repeated use with the same tip.
- Check filters and the tip before turning the pressure up again, rather than adjusting and moving on.
Sign 4: Material Usage Creeping Up
A worn tip does not just affect pattern quality. Its orifice has grown, so more material passes through it than the original size would allow. If material use climbs on jobs similar to ones you have sprayed before, a worn tip is worth checking before assuming the cause is a change in coating or technique.
How Long a Tip Actually Lasts
There is no single hour or gallon figure that applies to every tip, and we do not publish one. Tip life depends on the coating and how you use the tip, which is why watching for the performance signs above is more reliable than a fixed replacement interval.
Keeping Spares on Hand
Keeping a spare in your most commonly used sizes means a worn or damaged tip does not stop the job. The tip seat and seal wear parts too. Titan sells tip seals and a seat and seal kit, listed on the Titan seals page, and the RX-Pro manual points to replacing the ball valve and reversing the seat when a gun leaks or spits at the tip. Our Titan Tip Guards: No-Build, High Pressure, Adjustable and Flat post covers the guard side.
Matching the Tip to the Gun
Titan tips come in families: TR1 reversible, SC-6+ reversible, SC-6+ fine finish, TR1 HEA, high pressure, line striping and Brilliant Flat for the GM 3600. Each has its own pressure rating, and some pages show different figures for the same tip family, so check the rating printed on the tip you are buying against the lowest-rated part in your system. Titan's SC-6+ reversible tip page says it fits Titan and most other guards, but confirm that the tip and guard suit your gun before you order. Browse the airless spray tips category or call us with your gun model.
Tracking Tip Life by Job Type
Noting roughly how long a tip lasted, broken down by the type of coating sprayed, builds a practical reference over time. That record helps you decide when to swap a tip for upcoming jobs with the same coating, rather than being surprised by wear partway through a project.
