Titan 441-149 Backup Ring

Titan 441-149 Backup Ring

Sourced From:
Titan Tools Inc.

Part 441-149 Backup Ring is a rigid anti-extrusion device designed for use with O-rings in Hydra M and Hydra Pro Super series equipment. Installed on the low-pressure side of an O-ring, this backup ring prevents the O-ring from extruding into the clearance gap under high-pressure conditions. Replacing worn or damaged backup rings ensures proper O-ring function, extends seal life, and prevents catastrophic seal failure.

Backup Ring – Hydra M / Hydra Pro Super

The 441-149 Backup Ring is a rigid, split-ring component designed to support O-rings in high-pressure hydraulic and fluid systems on Hydra M and Hydra Pro Super equipment. When system pressure exceeds the O-ring material's ability to resist extrusion, the backup ring fills the gap on the low-pressure side, preventing the O-ring from being forced into the clearance and failing.

Without backup rings, O-rings in high-pressure applications can extrude into the metal-to-metal clearance, leading to rapid wear, nibbling, and eventual seal failure. Replacing worn or missing backup rings during routine maintenance ensures the O-ring remains properly contained and extends the life of the entire sealing system.

Service Guidance: Backup rings must be installed on the correct side of the O-ring (low-pressure side). For bidirectional pressure, two backup rings may be required (one on each side). Always inspect the groove for damage and ensure the backup ring is not twisted during installation.

Function & replacement indicators

Primary functions
Extrusion prevention Blocks O-ring material from entering clearance gaps under pressure
O-ring support Provides rigid backup to maintain O-ring position in the groove
Pressure handling Enables O-rings to seal effectively at higher system pressures
Extended seal life Reduces wear and nibbling on O-rings from pressure cycling
When replacement is needed
Cracks or breaks Split ring is fractured or pieces missing
Deformation Ring is bent, twisted, or no longer maintains its shape
O-ring extrusion Evidence that O-ring has extruded past the backup ring
Routine maintenance Replace whenever associated O-rings are serviced

Compatibility

This backup ring is designed for use with specific O-ring sizes in Hydra M and Hydra Pro Super equipment. Always verify your equipment's parts diagram to ensure correct fit and application.

Brand / Model Component
Hydra M Backup ring (for use with O-rings in high-pressure locations)
Hydra Pro Super Backup ring (for use with O-rings in high-pressure locations)

Related parts commonly replaced together

When servicing backup rings, these associated components are typically replaced at the same time.

O-rings

Backup rings work in conjunction with O-rings; replace both whenever the seal is disassembled.

Complete seal kits

Many applications offer kits containing all O-rings and backup rings for a specific assembly.

Assembly lubricant

Compatible lubricant prevents damage during installation of both O-rings and backup rings.

Frequently Asked Questions

A backup ring is a rigid anti-extrusion device installed alongside an O-ring. In high-pressure applications, system pressure can force the O-ring material into the gap between mating components, causing extrusion and rapid failure. The backup ring blocks this gap, protecting the O-ring and maintaining the seal.

Visible cracks, deformation, or pieces missing from the ring are clear indicators. Additionally, if you observe O-ring extrusion (O-ring material protruding past the backup ring), the backup ring has failed and both components should be replaced.

This 441-149 backup ring is designed for use with specific O-ring sizes in Hydra M and Hydra Pro Super series equipment. Consult your parts manual to confirm the exact application and position within your system.

Reusing backup rings is not recommended. They are relatively inexpensive compared to the cost of system downtime and component damage. Once compressed, they may have taken a set and may not provide the same level of protection. Always install new backup rings whenever you service the associated O-rings.
