Retainer Ring or Snap Ring for PowrBeast, PowrTwin, PowrLiner & PowrTex Sprayers

The 431-054 Retainer Ring or Snap Ring is a precision fastener used to secure components such as bearings, gears, and shafts in position on compatible PowrBeast, PowrTwin, PowrLiner, and PowrTex sprayer models. It installs into a groove to create a positive shoulder that prevents axial movement of parts.

Retaining rings, also known as snap rings or circlips, are essential for maintaining proper component positioning in rotating and stationary assemblies. They provide a removable shoulder that holds components in place while allowing for disassembly when needed. Available in internal and external configurations, these rings must maintain precise dimensions and spring characteristics to function reliably. The split in the ring allows it to compress for installation into a groove, then expand to create a positive stop.

Over time, retaining rings can become distorted from improper installation, wear from vibration, or corroded from environmental exposure. A damaged or missing retaining ring can allow components to shift axially, leading to misalignment, increased wear, binding, or catastrophic failure. Replacing a worn or damaged retaining ring restores proper component retention and ensures reliable operation of the assembly.

Installation Note: Use the proper retaining ring pliers for installation. Ensure the ring fully seats in the groove and rotates freely. Never reuse a retaining ring after removal.

What it does and when to replace it

What the retainer ring / snap ring does
Component retention Holds bearings, gears, and shafts in position
Axial location Prevents unwanted movement along shafts or in bores
Removable shoulder Provides a positive stop that allows disassembly
When replacement is needed
Distorted / bent Ring no longer seats properly in groove
Worn edges Wear affecting ring retention capability
Corrosion Rust or chemical damage compromising ring integrity
Missing ring Ring lost, components no longer secured

Related parts commonly serviced together

When replacing retainer rings, these associated components are often inspected or replaced at the same time.

Bearings

Check bearings for wear that may have occurred if the ring was missing.

Shaft / housing

Inspect the groove for damage or wear.

Retained components

Inspect gears, pulleys, or other parts the ring secures.

Frequently Asked Questions

The terms are often used interchangeably. Both refer to a ring with a split that fits into a groove to retain components. Some may refer to internal rings as snap rings and external as retainer rings, but functionally they are similar.

Signs include visible distortion, inability to stay in the groove, corrosion, or a missing ring.

PowrBeast 4700, 7700, 9700; numerous PowrTwin models; PowrLiner 4955, 6955, 8955, 6900 XLT SP, 4950, 6000, 6900 XLT, 6950, 8900 XLT SP; PowrTex 6900SF, 12000SV. See compatibility table for full list.

It is not recommended. Retainer rings can lose their spring tension and become distorted during removal. Always use a new ring when reassembling.
