The Important Role of Daily Flushing

Dried paint in the system is one of the most common causes of sprayer failure. You have to maintain a clean machine if you want a functional one.

Firstly, you should never allow the paint to remain in the hose gun or pump for more than an hour. Always use water for latex-based paints and you should use mineral spirits for oil-based coatings.

Then remove the spray tip as well as the guard. Submerge the suction tube into any bucket of the cleaning solvent and run your pump at low pressure until you see a clear fluid running through it.

The Poweliner 850 has filters designed in a way that they catch debris before it reaches the tip of the sprayer. After you have flushed the sprayer, remove the gun and the manifold filter. You can then clean them with a brush and a solvent.

Pump Care and Piston Lubrication

A piston pump is considered the heart of the sprayer because it moves at high speeds to generate pressure.

Before you use the sprayer, always apply a few drops of piston lube into the friction point of the sprayer pump. This will create a protective barrier that will prevent the paint from drying into the rod, which can otherwise negatively impact the packings.

The packing of the pump loosens over time, and if you see there is any paint leakage from the fluid section, you should know it is time to tighten the packing a little. If you feel there is wear and tear, then you can also install a pump repair kit.

Precision Tip and Gun Maintenance

Your quality of lines will be as good as the orifice that it is exiting. The spray tip is a part that is precision engineered that will dictate how crispy the stripes are.

Even though the reversible tip allows you to quickly clear the clogs, if there is still frequent clogging then know your paint is not properly strained or the filters are dirty.

You must also store the spray tips in a clean solution or in a sealed jar to make sure it keeps working properly. This will prevent the microscopic buildup that can distort the spray pattern.

You must also check the spray gun trigger for any delayed response. You must also ensure that the needle is correctly seated. If your gun is spitting when releasing the trigger, then you must know that the needle is worn out or it needs cleaning.

Engine and Drive System Upkeep

The Powrliner 850 works with a gas engine, and maintaining the motor is just as crucial as maintaining the fluid section of the sprayer.

You should always refer to the engine manual to see the intervals at which you need to change the oil. In general, you should always change the oil after every 50 hours of operation or when the season is changing.

You should check the air filter every week. If the filters are clogged, they can cause the engine to work harder, which will waste fuel and will also foul the spark plug.

You must also inspect the drive belt to see if there are any cracks. If the belt is slipping, it will cause inconsistent pressure, which will create uneven paint application.

Managing the Fluid Pressure

You should always try to find the lowest pressure setting that will give you a consistent fan pattern without heavy edges. This will reduce the workload on the engine, and we will also prevent abrasive wear of the paint on all the internal components.

You must also ensure that the pressure is functioning properly. If the needle is not returning to zero, you should immediately replace it. If you're operating the system blindly, it can lead to overpressurization, and there can also be dangerous hose bursts.
