Maintenance Of Your Spray-Gun

Painting is fun for many of us, but what happens after you are done painting? Let me tell you, there is a mess. so whether you are painting your vehicle or a certain part of your house it is all fun and games until its time to clean up that mess. The key here is not to get overwhelmed with the mess, Clean-up won't be a long process if you take good care of your spray-guns.  A lot of spray guns come with kits and tools like titan kits offer you a lot of kits that help you make the cleanup and maintenance of your gadgets very easy. In the article below we are mentioning a few tips and tricks for you to follow, which might help also you extend your spray-guns life.

Type Of Spray-Guns

There are many different kinds of spray-guns. It is very important to know and understand your spray gun type before you begin the process of clean-up. You accidentally might do something that might cost you an arm and a leg. Depending on the type of spray gun you have,  each of them will have two different passageways, for paint or air. The spray-gun, no matter what type generally uses similar components. When a spray gun uses air, a vacuum is formed that pulls the paint directly into the air stream. On the other hand, Gravity feed guns use gravity to supply the paint. However, HVLP paint guns also use more air but less pressure to apply paint coat.

Steps To Maintain Your Spray-Gun

The first most important step after you are done painting is to clean the gun and remove all the paint residue from it. The following are a few pointers:

  • Detach the Air-compressor and Air-regulator from your spray-gun.
  • Whatever paint you put into your gun, remove all of that paint and put in back in the can. However, if you used any hardner, put that paint in a separate container as this might ruin the fresh paint of the original can.
  • Wipe the container and accessories with the thinner and deep clean the utensil. Use paper towels or brown paper bags for this purpose.
  • If the paint stains are tough, fill the can up with the thinner, shake well and keep it till it loosens down the residue.
  • Similarly clean the gun with thinner, where the paint is stuck.
  • Dry the gun with paper towels and keep repeating the cleaning process till you are satisfied that no paint residue is left.

After you are done cleaning the paint residues, its time to clean your spray-gun. The following are a few tips to help you clean up your spray-gun:

  • Remove the fluid adjustment knob and the exposed spring. Press on the paint gun trigger and remove the Fluid needle out with care. This step should be followed carefully as it might damage the needle.
  • Remove the Air-cap and fluid nozzle very carefully, and dip both the component in a can full of thinner. This would ensure thorough cleaning of the parts, in case any paint residue is left in the parts you cant reach.
  • Clean the entire gun with the thinner and then water, keep repeating the process till everything is thoroughly cleaned. For parts that are hard to reach, apply thinner on a Q-tip and clean those parts.
  • The gun and all the parts need to dry out completely before the gun is used again.
  • Make sure to use a paper towel to dry out the gun or spray gun parts.
  • Reassemble your gun, Lubricate the parts that need oiling during the process. A few titan kits have lubricants that might help you speed up the process.

Maintain You Spray-Gun

  • Make sure the solvent you are using to clean your gun is strong enough to clean enamel or tough oil-based paints etc.
  • You can use disposable paint cup liners for your spray gun. Might make the process of clean-up a tad bit speedy.
  • Investing in an organic cleaner is good, but requires twice the time to get rid of the stains and residue.
  • Remember the remove the paint nozzle, if you are in between coats and you need to wait to apply another coat. Put the nozzle in thinner so the paint doesn't dry up in the nozzle and you can use it again for your second coat.
  • While Switching between the paint colors or paint types, please ensure between each switch to clean the nozzle and then apply the coat.
  • Wrap the air-cap with a wet towel so that the paint does not solidify in between intervals.

If you follow the tips we mentioned above and maintain your spray-guns, they might give you the best value out of them and make it worth your while.
